Today was the first day of working in Greater Grand Crossing and I have to say it went fantastically. The highlight of the day, for me, was the personal asset mapping we did. Each of us explored our strengths and interests, and then honed in on which were most important to us. It provided an opportunity for growth as a group as well as practice with presentation skills. We found a lot of similarities that will connect us as a team, but also a lot of uniqueness that will provide for interesting team dynamics.
Our asset mapping was also a success. I was extremely impressed with the questions that my team asked Brittany at eta Creative Arts. They seem to already be comfortable in the informal interview setting, and gained a lot of important information about the community that can be considered as we move forward. After eta Creative Arts, our team stumbled on a spontaneous service project with a Greater Auburn Gresham program that works on violence prevention in Greater Grand Crossing. Before we helped her set up for her meeting, the woman who runs the program, Aurora, spoke to us about her work and efforts to decrease violence on the South Side.
The day was a great start to our program, and I look forward to the future.
