Welcome, Youth Leaders!
We are thrilled to work with you for the next seven weeks! Our community partners are eager to meet and work with you all! We are especially excited to get to know you and learn about your accomplishments, life experiences, and strengths. Your knowledge, vision, and skill sets will be vital to the success of the Summer Service Partnership program.
Your mentors are Mike, Kelsey, and Claudia:
- Mike just completed his first year of studies at the School of Social Service Administration. He is from the Seattle area, and is interested in community violence, therapy, and youth development.
- Kelsey is a rising second- year undergraduate at UChicago. She is from Vermont, and plans to major in biology and/or chemistry with hopes to attend medical school in the future.
- Claudia is a rising second year medical student at UChicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine. She hails from Seattle, WA and is interested in health disparities, women’s health, and environmental sustainability.
This week, we have been busy learning about SSP, the Washington Park community, and ways to strengthen your leadership skills. So far, we have reached out to the RTW Veteran’s Center, Chicago Youth Programs, and Washington Park District to plan service projects that address important community needs. If you’ve thought of some places you would like to serve, or have identified additional needs in Washington Park, bring your ideas next week!
Our community home base, the KLEO Center, has provided us with a great deal of support and hospitality from the moment we walked through its doors. If you have a minute, explore the KLEO website (http://thekleocenter.org); there’s a great video about their background and goals. This summer, the KLEO Center wants to focus on projects surrounding gun violence, obesity, and nutrition in Washington Park.
Come ready to work hard, be flexible, and learn! We’re going to have a fun and fulfilling summer, and we can’t wait to collaborate with you all!
See you soon!
Mike, Kelsey, and Claudia
