This was the first week with our full team, and we have a lot of ideas for working in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood. We talked about our interested in community health and our team set our expectations and goals for the summer. Our goals include making strong connections with each other and the community, learning more about health disparities in Chicago, getting information and experience in the medical field, and most importantly, having fun!
We had a tour of our host site, Gary Comer Youth Center, which has a lot of amazing programs and resources that can be an asset to us. For our first service project, we participated in a neighborhood beautification project and collected trash throughout the Greater Grand Crossing Community. We also discussed the difference between health equity and health equality. With equality, everyone is given the same resources, but health equity gives each person what they need to achieve the same outcome. Overall, our first week with our group was fantastic!
